6 keys to making your project portfolio reviews more effective
Preparation, prioritization, arbitration: those are the three watchwords of a good portfolio review. Take the time to apply the following six practices at your next meeting, and watch what it does to your effectiveness.
Prioritize the topics you will cover
Rank the topics for your review by how well they align with your strategic and organizational goals. The idea is to tackle the most important ones first — those that bring the organization the most value, and those most at risk at the time of the review. Prefer delaying or rejecting a low-value project over one that gives the company a new competitive edge or a real innovation.
Invite the right people to your portfolio review
Invite only the people who can make decisions, or who genuinely inform the decision-making. That keeps the attention on moving your portfolio forward and tightens the debate around what matters. Ideally: the executive committee, the sponsors of each program (the business units), and, where relevant, the managers of the projects currently at risk.
Send your reporting ahead of the meeting
